Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers

All-Thumbs Anonymous doesn’t exist, but should an NFL chapter open its doors, Jones and Cutler might consider attending. Coping with losing the ball in this long-standing series can be problematic.Jones, a wide receiver for the Packers, and Cutler, the starting quarterback for the Bears, each turned the ball over last year in the hard-nosed rivalry that is Packers-Bears. Both did so in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter when ball security is a an absolute premium.Bears-Packers has entailed separating pigskin from player since the teams first met. In a feud this old, it can be difficult to determine an instigator, but Jake Lanum, with his third quarter interception of Curly Lambeau on Nov. 27, 1921, is a likely culprit. Not to worry. Green Bay’s Art Schmael returned the favor later in the quarter with an interception of his own. There never has been a Bears-Packers regular-season meeting — 180 games and counting — without a turnover. That’s likely to continue Sunday, even in this era of heightened ball security.Since 2007, Green Bay and Chicago are the best at forcing turnovers. Eight of the top 10 teams on the list have winning records, and one — the Cardinals — have won as many games as they’ve lost. It’s been tit for tat since. The Packers have created 133 turnovers in the last 66 regular-season games. Their 98 passes intercepted is the best haul over that span. The Bears are next with 132 turnovers. They lean more toward fumble recoveries — the 59 they’ve accumulated is second only to the 67 of the Lions.Green Bay is 31-6 since 2007 in regular-season games in which it commits fewer turnovers than its opponent. Chicago is 22-4.The Bears have won 11 consecutive regular-season games in which they won the turnover battle. The Packers own a streak of 15 straight. The challenge at Soldier Field couldn’t be more obvious: avoid turnovers. In the last 16 regular-season games between these NFC North neighbors, the team that won the turnover battle won the game. In three of the four instances in which both clubs committed an equal number of turnovers, the winner was the one that scored the most points as a result of those miscues.
